Starting the journey today |
Well, I decided today that I will listen to every recording of the grateful dead in chronological order. I work in an office by myself all day so it is a great way to pass the time. Figured I could get at least two shows in a day. The early recordings may go faster. Should be interesting and hope to uncover some gems.

Re: Starting the journey today |
There was a guy who used to post here under the name of gilamonster58 who had embarked on the same journey. He discusses it in this thread as he is 11 months in and only into 1974. So I hope you are prepared for a long strange trip! Good luck!

Re: Starting the journey today |
Thank you for the info on that post. I love the comments provided as much as the tunes sometimes. It is a hard thing to find now a days a community built around a band (or was it the other way around.) I won't restrict all my listening to just the chronological order at home, in the car, etc. But at work it is on. They challenged me six months ago at work that I wouldn't wear sandals everyday, and now that its summer who's laughing. Have to have good goals in life.

Reminds me of a film I saw a while back.
I think it had Jack Nicholson in it.
Now what was it called ?
Yeah, that's right ........... "The Shining".
Check your typewriter - make sure it don't read:
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy".
Again and again and again ...............

Nothing after '78, hmm. I wonder if Brent was too much for him to endure & he quit? Too bad he never gave us a big essay on the development of the Dead...

I just listened to 10-31-79 on S/XM and as good as the band was playing, Brent's sound during that period would make it hard to take day after day.
I am also disappointed that he never let us know how it went and what he learned. I always found his posts on his journey to be interesting and insightful.

You'll uncover some gems but once you get into the early 80's they will become rarer and rarer and rarer. If you make it all the way through the 90s, you are a tougher man (or woman) than I.

The 90s? Pffft.. if you make it through the '86 Dylan and the Dead tour then you'll do just fine.

I really enjoy the development of the band. How they went from the heavy blues influence, singing harmonies and how that changed over time. Time is perceived as linear only.

Understood. I am a save the best for last kind of guy. Thus I think I'd like to hear Vince and old Jerry first, then Pig and Jerry the Ripper last.
Corrina first Cream Puff War last.
Samba first Viola Lee Blues last.
95 first 65 last.
If I went the other way, I'd likely peter-out at 1993. Also, it would be easier to get through a year like 1993 if I knew 88-89 were on the horizon rather than 94-95.
In any case, I am not taking the trip and you are! Good luck.

What do you mean 'if'? There is precedent for flow going both ways.

Firstly, welcome. :)
And we dont take to kyndly of trolls or idiots (no offense
Rich) round here~ just a warning.
Honesty is the best policy our new found friend.
Best of luck to you Lewis and/or Clark.
I did 1991 all the way through, and it took me a YEAR as
well. I found myself listing to the same show twice a day
sometimes because I found myself unfocused enough to say,
"better hear that whole thing again, dammit".
So, again, good luck. Keep us posted, unless you are an
@$$hol# with bad intentions.
Sean~ "breadcrumbs" ~ LOL post of the day for me. THANKS

Re: Starting the journey today |
I have been working on this for over a year and a half and I am only mid way through 77, although in full disclosure I did not go chronologically, I started with 70 -73 and then went back and did 66-67 and back to 76 and then 74-77 where I am now. After 77 I plan to go back 69 and finish that up and then go from 78 on through. No particular reason why I chose this way I just felt for me it would keep it fresher if I did it this way. Now unlike you I cannot listen at work (being a teacher does not allow for much music listening during the day) so it has taken me a lot longer than I thought and I am still only halfway there but eventually I will make it through. So enjoy the process and if it becomes too much don't hesitate to listen to something else for a while until you feel ready to go back to the GD, there is some awfully good stuff this band has put out and the fact it is all for us to listen to here is amazing

Re: Starting the journey today |
Thanks everybody, for the good words of encouragement. Not a troller or a@@hol# (even though I have been called that before ha ha, not even positive what a troller is but my kids laugh at me because I don't have a cell phone or facebook thing.) I just noticed everyday I would bounce around listening to different shows based on comments or certain songs I wanted to hear. So I decided that to really grasp the whole history, I would have to listen like it was a book. Take the good with the bad and so forth. I know it is going to get tough in spots (esp. the nineties) but even the worst years have touches of pure gold (MSG 10-14-94.) I am always listening to other new groups the former members are in; really like the Weir, Greene, and Robinson trio; anything Phil does; and going to check out Mickey at the Terrapin Harvest festival this fall; and a few newer groups esp. Band of Heathens and Gillian Welch and David Rawlings.

Re: Starting the journey today |
I did a similar thing a few years ago, but didn't listen to EVERY show, and made it to 12/31/71. I only listened to the most popular shows, and ended up listening to around 250 shows, stopping at '71, because I desperately needed to hear different songs and set lists. So many songs I missed hearing.
It was fun, but I don't think I'll ever have a desire to try it again. It would be interesting to know how many people have actually done it all the way through. I wish Mr. Trailhead lots of luck, but I don't see it happening.
